Pantsula
Class description
Pantsula is highly energetic dance form that originated in the black townships of South
Africa during the Apartheid era. It is syncopated, quick-stepping, low to the ground form of dance
which evokes the urban street culture of which it is a part. Due to western influences, Pantsula has
emerged into sub genres such as sbhujwa, skhothane, bhenga. It is heavily significant with the
modern afro-beat movement with core moves such as Gwara gwara and vosho. In the class,
students would also learn the Pantsula grooves as part of their foundation.
What to wear
Stretchy dance gear or comfortable exercise wear. Basically you need something that won’t limit your range of motion. For shoes it is best to wear sneakers or dance shoes without heels. You can also dance barefeet even though you will lack a bit of support. Bring extra clothes for after the class and bring some water because you will sweat.
