Susie Smith

Susie specialises in the african and traditional foundations of Latin dance. Her first love is the many different regional forms of Samba and Afro Brazilian dance (Maracatu, Afoxé, ijexá, Frevo, Axé, Samba Reggae, Coco and Ciranda) from the Northeast of Brazil. Her other interests include the fusion between styles (e.g. latin with funk, contemporary with afro traditional). Susie studies and performs each year in Brazil in Pernambuco (Recife/Olinda), Rio and Salvador Bahia. She is mentored by Nacao Pernambuco as part of their Nacao Terra Project and she is one of the directors of Umbela Brazil: These organisations are global collaborations to share Afro Brazilian musical culture with the world. Susie has had over ten years experience in latin dance, both as a teacher and a performer. Her classes are infectiously happy, energetic, and positive. She adores holding a space for students to find their love and connection to their own dancing body, in their own way. Her teacher training was with “the Professor” Maestre Jose Prates (sadly now passed on) and she acknowledges many of Sydney’s great teachers, especially Ruth Jesus, Jean-luc Stora, Morro, the Ribeiro Brothers, Ana Soares and Sky Blue, as contributing to her own unique blend.
